The Massive Topic!

I’ve taken some time to answer a few questions on Quora about living and being alone, and I’m surprised by the response. I wrote about this before, after answering my first questions and noticing the huge response. Since then, I’ve answered a few more questions to test the waters, and I can confirm it’s a huge topic.

If I had to generalize, it seems to be mostly around the fear of the lifestyle, as if being alone is going to be complete hell. I assure them it’s not.

I think most entrepreneurs know the feeling of being alone as a rite of passage. Those early days were not with a mate of any kind. Relationships are hard when you’re working almost twenty hours a day, seven days a week, and that was definitely the case. You are alone through your ups and downs, and I’ll never forget the day my girlfriend during my second venture wished for my failure so I’d have a life outside of work. I can still remember exactly where we were when she said it.

The point is that much of my life has been a solo journey, so I’m an accidental expert on the subject of going it alone, no matter what it is, be it running a company or just consulting. This is not to say I’m not surrounded by friends and people I pay to help me.

I don’t give my aloneness any thought throughout the day because I remain so busy, and I have so many things I want to accomplish. It’s not a badge in any way. It’s just the circumstances of my life, so as I answer these questions on Quora, I’m mindful of how monumental it is to them, while to me it’s a mere footnote in my life.

Right now, as I write this, Quora shows me having 1.2 million views this month. It’s hard to imagine that many people reading or glancing at my work for more than a few seconds, but it’s a big number. I’m covering three topics: business, as I always have; automotive, which is somewhat new; and now this new topic of being alone. I don’t have a clue how far it will go, but for those who read a lot of my stuff, this new topic is where this is all taking me for now.

I want to answer questions because I think it’s important, and the whole reason I’m on Quora is to share what I know about any topic. This just happens to be a massive one. Stay tuned!
